Program Requirements

The UNM Anthropology Undergraduate Program offers these different concentrations: Archaeology, Evolutionary Anthropology, and Ethnology. Information about each concentration and the courses required to earn a degree are listed below.

(Anthropology 101 is optional for any of the concentrations)

Archaeology (36 Credits)

The following courses are required for the Archaeology concentration.

  • ANTH 101 (optional)

  • ANTH 120 (3 credits)

  • ANTH 122L (1 credit)

  • ANTH 220 (3 credits)

  • ANTH 320 (3 credits)

Students must also take one additional course from each of three groups (A, B, C) for a total of at least 9 credits:

  • Group A: Technical (ANTH 372, 373, 375, 473L, 480, 482L)

  • Group B: Europe, Asia, Africa (ANTH 325, 326, 327, 328, 329)

  • Group C: North and South America (ANTH 321, 322, 323, 324, 329, 371, 376, 421)

  • ANTH 420 may be applied to the above groups B or C, depending on topic. (See department advisor)

In addition, a student must complete one additional core sequence within anthropology (Ethnology: ANTH 130 & 330, OR 310, OR Evolutionary Anthropology: ANTH 150 OR 160 & 350 OR 360), plus an elective from a third sub-field (at 200+ level), plus elective credits to complete the minimum of 36 credits in anthropology.

Evolutionary Anthropology (36 Credits)

The following courses are required for the Biological Anthropology concentration.

  • ANTH 101 (optional)

  • ANTH 150 (3 credits) with ANTH 151L (1 credit) OR ANTH 160 (3 credits) with ANTH 161L (1 credit)

  • ANTH 350 (3 credits) OR ANTH 360 (3 credits)

Plus 4 upper-division courses (300–400 level) in Evolutionary Anthropology. Two of the four courses must come from three topics areas, and students seeking a BS degree must complete a laboratory class of 3 or more credits (see Undergraduate Handbook for course selections).

In addition, a student must complete one additional core sequence within anthropology, (Ethnology: ANTH 130 & 330, OR 310, OR Evolutionary Anthropology: ANTH 150 OR 160 & 350 OR 360), plus an elective from a third sub-field, plus elective credits to complete the minimum of 36 credits in anthropology.

Ethnology (36 Credits)

The following courses are required for the Ethnology/Linguistics concentration.

  • ANTH 101 (optional)

  • ANTH 130 (3 credits)

  • ANTH 310 (3 credits)

  • ANTH 330 (3 credits)

Plus two AREA courses (ANTH 331, 332, 337, 343, 345, 384, 387) and two TOPICS courses (ANTH 317, 318, 333, 339, 340, 341, 344, 346, 380, 385, 410,413, 415,416, 444, 448).

ANTH 340 courses may be approved to count in the Area group, depending on subject matter. (Please see department advisor)

Anthropology Honors Program

REQUIRED Course Work (in addition to 36 hours for major):

  • ANTH 498, offered fall semester only.

  • ANTH 497 (3 credits), individual research under guidance of the mentor.

  • Copy of final paper must be deposited with the department office.

In these 6 hours, grades of two A's, OR an A and a B are required.
