Associate Professor of Music & Anthropology and Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Kristina Jacobsen, has just released and directed her first documentary film, From Sardinia to New Mexico: Multipart Singing as Intercultural Exchange.The film, released in both English and Italian, was commissioned by a Sardinian cultural organization focusing on the study of traditional singing styles across this Mediterranean island. It features film footage and insights from students enrolled from the class, “Singing and Ethnography of the Mediterranean: Sardinia, Italy,” a study abroad class that went to Sardinia, last May (2024).

From Sardinia to New Mexicoexplores an experience in cultural exchange between New Mexico (United States) and Sardinia (Italy). The 15-minute documentary follows the interaction between students at the University of New Mexico and singers from various Sardinian towns, reflecting on how learning traditional singing can act as a bridge for intercultural understanding. Through a personal and analytical approach, the film narrates a story of sharing and growth through the experience of oral tradition music.

Jacobsen will screen the New Mexico premier of this film, together with the feature film of UNM Fulbright Scholar Diego Pani, “Mantennere,” on Sunday February 16 ( 1 pm) at the Guild Theatre.
