Public Archaeology

The UNM Department of Anthropology's Masters in Public Archaeology program is designed for students who wish to pursue a terminal MA or MS degree with a focus in applied archaeology. This two-year program gives students the ability to customize their coursework based on their interests, while providing both a firm grounding in archaeological method and theory and practical experience in applied archaeology. Students in the Public Archaeology masters program take core classes in Archaeology alongside PhD students. In addition, students may take classes in and/or work with a wide variety of affiliated campus programs, includingthe Earth Data Analysis Center, the Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation and Regionalism, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the UNM Museum Studies Program, and the Office of Contract Archaeology. Off-campus, students may have opportunities to work with the Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, the US National Park Service and other federal agencies, as well as with the wide variety of tribal, state, private and non-profit agencies located in New Mexico. Graduates of the program have found employment with a wide variety of governmental and private archaeology organizations.
