Cassie Smith co-organizes "Teaching Mexican American Studies through Local Archives and Community-Based Pedagogy" Symposium

Ethnology doctoral student Cassie Smith was awarded the Benson Digital Scholarship Fellowship with the LLILAS-Benson library at the University of Texas. During the fellowship, she used the Mexican American Manuscript Collection at the Benson to create a digital education guide called "Mexican American Arts, Activism, and Education in Austin, Texas." She co-coordinated a symposium on March 30, 2019 called "Teaching Mexican American Studies through Local Archives and Community-Based Pedagogy Symposium for educators, which also provided professional development opportunities for the high school teachers who attended. The symposium took place at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) where Ms. Smith is a teaching artist.
