Cassie Smith, doctoral student in Ethnology, has received the  Rogers Research Award.  Ms Smith has also been awarded a Hibben Doctoral Fellowship.  Both the Rogers Research Award and the Hibben Doctoral Research Award support her doctoral research at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin, Texas.

Ms. Smith’s collaborative ethnographic study addresses the relationship between public schooling, urban development, and Mexican American community-based education at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) in Austin, Texas.  She is working with artists, arts administrators, and educators to understand how they respond to social pressures effecting Latinx communities in Central Texas through arts-based educational programming and events.
