Jack, as he was known to us, was former Chair and Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, as well as former Director and a Research Associate of the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology. In May 2012, Campbell was awarded an honorary degree from the University of New Mexico, one of four members of Anthropology at UNM to be so recognized. Over a period of 50 years, Jack advanced the mission and role of UNM and the state of New Mexico. In 1964, he was recruited to be Chair of Anthropology, a position he held for eight years. He hired more than 20 new faculty members, was responsible for building the department into a highly ranked program, raised funds for the new Maxwell Museum building, established the Chaco Canyon Research Project and for 30 years pursued interdisciplinary research in archaeology, ethnology and zoology in the Arctic and American Southwest. After his retirement in 1992, Campbell developed new passions in large format black and white photography and as an essayist. His work has been widely exhibited in New Mexico, nationally and internationally. Campbell published 14 volumes of research, photography, and essays. His writings recognize the beauty and variety of natural environments in western North America and the histories and cultures of its indigenous peoples.
A service will be held on September 16, 2013, 3 pm, at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology on the UNM campus to honor Professor Campbell. Please contact Jennifer George (jgeorge2@unm.edu) for more details.
